ST. JOHN'S –
Ashley Milhomme was named tournament Most Valuable Player at the inaugural Marie's Mini Mart Fall Classic as the Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team posted a 2-1 record and won their second consecutive pre-season tournament. This time the Memorial Sea-Hawks were the hosts in St. John's, Nfld. this past weekend.
Friday, Oct. 14 vs. Nipissing – W 76-61
First-year guard Maeva Dinalle led the Gaiters with 21 points and was named Player of the Game as Bishop's took a 47-26 lead at halftime and easily held on for a 76-61 victory over the Nipissing Lakers (OUA).
Maude Archambault chipped in with 18 points including a 4-for-6 performance from behind the arc. Milhomme added 12 points.
Saturday, Oct. 15 vs. Brandon – W 82-51
An early 30-8 lead after the first quarter paced the Gaiters over the Brandon Bobcats (Canada West) in Saturday's contest.
Noemie Hamel-Petit was named Player of the Game with 16 points and seven rebounds. She also connected four times from three-point range on nine attempts. Milhomme led the Gaiters with 20 points, 4-for-6 from downtown, while Archambault chipped in with 10.
Mara Marchizotti grabbed 10 rebounds.
Sunday, Oct. 16 vs. Memorial – L 77-63
Despite maintaining a 55-51 lead after three quarters, the Gaiters were only able to muster eight fourth quarter points while the host Memorial Sea-Hawks (AUS) scored 26 to capture the 77-63 victory and hand Bishop's their first loss of the preseason.
For the Gaiters Marchizotti recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Edith Noblecilla scored 14 to lead Bishop's offensive attack. Dinalle added 11 points and Milhomme 10 to round out Gaiters in double figures.
Despite the loss, Bishop's was named tournament champions, their second victory in as many events.
Next up the Gaiters (5-1) they play a pair of exhibition contests in the U.S. They will face Assumption College and Bentley University on Oct. 29 and 30, respectively.
