Box Score 3 SHERBROOKE, Que. - The Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team went 1-2 on their weekend road trip to Alberta. They defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 89-69 on Thursday, then fell 71-69 to the Lethbridge Pronghorns on a buzzer-beater on Friday, and dropped a 77-71 decision to the Pronghorns on Saturday.
On Thursday, the Gaiters overcame a sluggish start to ease past Mount Royal 89-69 in the first meeting ever between the schools. The Gaiters led 18-12 after the first quarter, and 41-29 at halftime. Bishop's exploded for 30 third-quarter points to put the game out of reach.
Jona Bermillo (Montreal, Que.) led the Gaiters with 16 points, while
Nick Harvey (Saint-Bruno, Que.) had 15. Josh Ross led the Cougars with 23 points.
On Friday, a buzzer-beater by Josh Sparkes broke a 69-69 tie and gave the Lethbridge Pronghorns the win in the first of the two-game series. The Gaiters had come back from a 56-47 third-quarter deficit to tie the game on a three-pointer by
Owen Martel (Erin, Ont.) with 47 seconds remaining.
David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que.) led the Gaiters with 18 points, while Martel finished with 12 and
Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que.) had 11. Elliott Sentance led Lethbridge with 23 points, while Mike Pierzchala had 18. Sparkes finished with eight. The Gaiters outrebounded Lethbridge 42-33, led by Belanger's 14, as he completed the double-double.
On Saturday, the Pronghorns completed the sweep with a 77-71 win over the Gaiters. The Gaiters came out strong, leading 17-6 after the first quarter and 42-24 at halftime, but saw the lead slip away in the second half. A pair of three-pointers by Pierzchala with just over a minute to go put the Pronghorns in front and the home team settled matters with four free throws down the stretch. Bermillo led the Gaiters with 18 points, while Kamane had 12 and Martel had 10. Pierzchala led all scorers with 23 points, while Sentance added 21 for the Pronghorns. Pierzchala also had a game-high 10 rebounds to complete the double-double.
The Gaiters are now 2-3 against U Sport opposition (3-4 overall). Their next action is this weekend, when they travel to Ottawa for the Jack Donohue Invitational. They will be in action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday against a trio of OUA opponents.
