Box Score 3 SHERBROOKE, Que. - The Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team went 1-2 at the Jack Donohue Tournament in Ottawa last weekend, their third consecutive 1-2 weekend. The Gaiters (4-6 overall, 3-5 U Sports, 0-0 RSEQ) fell to Ottawa on Friday, lost to the Waterloo Warriors 96-92 in OT on Saturday and edged the U of T Varsity Blues 78-76 on Sunday.
On Friday, a balanced attack led the Ottawa Gee-Gees to an 89-56 win over the Gaiters. Ottawa had four players in double figures as they led 27-10 after the first quarter, and 41-18 at halftime as they never trailed in the contest.
Joany Castor-Thadal came off the bench to lead the Gaiters with 11 points, while
Jona Bermillo had 10 and
Nick Harvey and
Yassin Naji each had nine. For Ottawa, Adam Presutti led with 17 points, while Matt Plunkett had 14, Caleb Agada had 12 and Jean Pierre-Charles had 10. The Gee-Gees shot 51.5% from the field.
On Saturday, an 8-0 run in overtime propelled the Waterloo Warriors to a 96-92 (OT) win over the Gaiters. The game featured seven ties and nine lead changes, as the Gaiters led by as many as 20 points in the first half, and 41-35 at halftime. Bishop's held a 65-58 lead after the third quarter, but Waterloo opened the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 66. In overtime, the Warriors' 8-0 run gave them a 90-83 lead with 90 seconds to play.
David Belanger led the Gaiters with a game-high 24 points, while
Jona Bermillo had 23 points. Castor-Thadal came off the bench to score 14 points, while
Owen Martel had 10.
Nick Harvey led the Gaiters on the boards with nine rebounds, to go with his nine points. Waterloo had five players in double figures, led by 22 points from Mike Pereira and Jon Ravenhorst. Nedim Hodzic added 18 points, Simon Petrov finished with 14 and Justin Hardy had 12 for the Warriors.
On Sunday, a pair of last-minute three-pointers led the Gaiters to a come-from-behind 78-76 win over the U of T Varsity Blues. Castor-Thadal hit a triple with 55 seconds to play and Bermillo scored from long range with 14 seconds left to give Bishop's the win. The lead changed hands five times in the game, with both teams leading by as much as 11 points.
Nick Harvey's double-double led the Gaiters, as he scored 17 points and grabbed 19 rebounds. Belanger was the Gaiters' highest scorer, with 20 points, while Bermillo scored 18, and Castor-Thadal had 15.
For Toronto, Devin Johnson led with 38 points on 15-for-29 shooting. Chase Ruttenberg was the only other Blue in double figures, with 10 points.
The Gaiters head south next weekend, as they visit Southern New Hampshire, an NCAA Division II school, on Friday in Hooksett, N.H. and Division III Lyndon State (Vt.) on Saturday. They open RSEQ play on Thursday, Nov. 10 at Concordia.
