Men’s Basketball: Gaiters hope to get back on the winning track at Laval

SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team heads up to Quebec City to take on the Laval Rouge et Or on Friday night. Tipoff at the PEPS is set for 8 p.m.
 
The Gaiters (3-7, 0-2 RSEQ) come into the game after a pair of losses in games that went down to the final seconds. On Thursday, they fell 70-67 to the Concordia Stingers, and then returned home Saturday and fell 76-72 to the UQAM Citadins.
 
Nick Harvey (Saint-Bruno, Que. /Champlain-St. Lambert) (St-Bruno, Que.) has led the Gaiter attack with 14.5 points per game. He is currently fourth on the conference scoring list, while Jona Bermillo (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) (Montreal, Que.) is fifth at 13.5. Bermillo is the conference's leading playmaker, with 5.0 assists per game. Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College ) (Montreal, Que.) is ninth in the league with 11.0 points per game.
 
The Gaiters' opposition, the Laval Rouge et Or, are 3-8 against U Sport opposition, and 1-1 in league play. Laval has lost six of their past eight games, but split a pair of one-point games on the opening weekend of league play. They fell 62-61 to McGill last Thursday, but came back to down Concordia 66-65. Laval's leading scorer so far is third-year forward Alexandre Leclerc. The Saguenay, Que., native has averaged 19 points so far this year. Nicolas Begin (13.0 ppg) and Karl Demers-Belanger (12.5 ppg) are the other Rouge et Or players averaging in double figures.
 
Friday's game is the first of four matchups between the two teams. Last year, the teams split their two matchups in Quebec City, with the Gaiters winning 77-73 on Jan. 23, 2016 while Laval won 82-67 on March 3, 2016. Over the past four years, the Gaiters have a 9-8 edge in the all-time series.
 
After Friday, the Gaiters are off until Saturday, Nov. 26, when they host the McGill Redmen at the Mitchell Gym.
