SHERBROOKE, Que. – Friday night will be special in Mitchell Gymnasia and not just because the Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team will host the UQAM Citadins at 6 p.m. in RSEQ University women's basketball action.  The game will mark the annual Shoot for the Cure event as the Gaiters raise money for the Fondation du Cancer du Sien du Quebec.

Coming Home
This year marks the ninth year of Shoot for the Cure, an initiative that was started at Bishop's University by Rod Gilpin, current men's head coach and women's bench boss at the time. It has grown to where all 47 CIS women's basketball programs run an event to help the great cause. This season total donations since its inception will surpass the $1,000,000 mark from the Canadian Women's Basketball Coaches Association to various breast cancer foundations across the nation.  To mark the milestone a pink ball has been travelling coast-to-coast and will make its visit to Lennoxville on Friday night.

No Pressure
The Bishop's Gaiters (0-12) have been eliminated from playoff contention this season.  With four games remaining the Gaiters, who graduate zero players this year, will look to the future. Noemie Hamel-Petit of Magog, Que. who is in her second season and leads the team in minutes played (36.2 minutes per game) and is second in scoring at 8.8 points per game is poised to be a difference maker.  Rookie and Repentigny, Que. native Ashley Milhomme leads the Gaiters in scoring, tallying 9.8 points per game.  The floor general is certain to be a key cog moving forward.

So Close
UQAM has had its fair share of heartbreak.  After losing last year's RSEQ Championship to McGill by two points in Mitchell Gym, the Citadins looked poised to get over the hump. They currently sit at 7-5 and are in third place in the conference.  A week ago they could not exert any revenge as they fell to the Martlets 54-52 and 54-51 in back-to-back games. UQAM did beat McGill on one occasion before the Christmas break.

Look out for Lubin
Jessica Lubin of Montreal leads UQAM and the RSEQ in scoring, tallying 15.3 points per game; she's also fourth in rebounding (8.1 per game) and third in field goal percentage at .475. Add her 2.1 steals per game and 11 blocks through 12 games and she's a force the Gaiters will have to deal with. The two-time RSEQ all-star is poised to claim her third straight honour.

The Season Series
Bishop's and UQAM have tipped off on three occasions with the Citadins winning each time. The foes opened the season in Montreal with a 54-35 UQAM triumph.  They also started the second semester with a home-and-home series that saw the blue team win 81-52 and 71-47. Lubin scored in double figures in all three contests, while Milhomme led Bishop's with 19 and 16 points respectively in the two most recent contests.

Coach Craig's Corner
"I think we have all been touched by breast cancer either by family or friends and I'm no exception to the rule," said Craig Norman, coach of the Gaiters. "There is a special connection with Bishop's as Coach Gilpin started the initiative years ago."

"UQAM is a hell of a team. I think there is a certain injustice when they are not ranked in the top-10.  They are not getting the respect they deserve, but trust me we respect them."

The Fun is Almost Done
Friday's contest is the penultimate one in Mitchell Gymnasium for the Gaiters.  They will wrap up their home schedule with a contest on Saturday, Feb. 20 against the Concordia Stingers at 6 p.m.
