SHERBROOKE, Que. – Saturday's RSEQ University Men's Basketball game comes with uncertainty for the Bishop's Gaiters. They tip-off with the Concordia Stingers at 8 p.m. in Mitchell Gym. What they do know is it is the last time they will play in Lennoxville in the 2015-16 campaign. What they don't know is if their playoff lives will still be on the line.
PLAYOFF PUSHAfter a slow start Bishop's is relying on their foes for some help if they want to keep their chance at a title defense alive. The Gaiters sit at 3-10 and are three games behind both UQAM and Laval. UQAM has topped Bishop's in three of four contests therefore has any tiebreaker over the Gaiters with just three games remaining. With one game remaining between the Rouge et Or and Gaiters, Laval holds a 2-1 edge with a plus-10 point differential. All that to say the Bishop's must win their remaining three games including the one against Laval by 11 points or more and the Rouge et Or must lose all of their remaining contests. Laval plays McGill on Friday night in Quebec City.
WELCOME WESTONPeter Weston of Quebec City transferred to Bishop's from Saint Anselm College in the United States. After battling injuries the exciting guard put on his best performance a week ago against UQAM. He tallied 24 points and sent the Mitchell Gym faithful home happy as Bishop's chalked up their first victory on home soil this year.
SUPER SENIORThe Gaiters will honour one graduating player,
Jona Bermillo of Montreal, prior to the game on Saturday. The fourth year Vanier College product has led Gaiters in scoring at 13.5 points per game (6
th in the RSEQ). He will have the option to return to play a fifth season. Bermillo was a key cog in the Gaiters' 2015 RSEQ Championship run.
KOOL KAMANEAbdul Kamane of Montreal has had one of the best rookie seasons in recent memory in purple. The Vanier product sits just behind Bermillo in scoring at 13.2 points per game, which places him seventh in the conference and tops among freshmen. The well rounded player is also second in the conference at 7.4 rebounds per game, tied with teammate and fellow rookie
Nick Harvey. He's also shooting .432 from the floor (8
th in the RSEQ), is 10
th in free throw percentage (.675), fifth in steals (1.7 per game) and is seventh in minutes at 31.2 per game (tops on the Gaiters roster).
STELLAR STINGERKen Beaulieu leads Concordia and sits fourth overall in the RSEQ with 14.9 points per game. The last time out against the Gaiters he led all scorers with 15 points.
GILPINS GAB"Concordia has been the best team in our conference since Christmas," said Gaiters bench boss
Rod Gilpin. "They are challenging for first place. This is certainly a test for us. We are still alive right now and if Laval loses on Friday night we will be playing to keep our playoff hopes alive on Saturday. I think any game with playoff implications is good for our experience."
NEXT UPBishop's will have two games remaining on the road after Saturday's contest. Whether or not they mean something is dependent on this week's results. The Gaiters are next on the hardwood in Montreal against McGill on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m.
