SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters are still alive in the playoff race in RSEQ University basketball action heading into the weekend against the No. 8 McGill Redmen. They will face the RSEQ leaders on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Montreal.
Playoff Plight Bishop's is still looking for a spot in the RSEQ Final-4 that is set to take place at McGill on Mar. 11 and 12. They must continue their winning streak and Laval must lose Saturday night to UQAM to avoid the Gaiters missing the playoffs. Bishop's will be in control of their own fate if they make it through this weekend as they will travel to Quebec City to face the Rouge et Or on Thursday, Mar. 3 at 8 p.m. in the final contest of the season.
Senior Sensation In his senior night,
Jona Bermillo from Montreal led the Gaiters with 14 points and had six rebounds in a 74-66 win over Concordia (9-6). The Vanier College alum does have the opportunity to return to the Gaiters next year for a fifth season.
Rookies Rule the Court Freshmen
Duncan Lambert (Kingston, Ont.),
Nick Harvey (Saint-Bruno, Que.) and
Jonah Fogg (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) have stepped up their game over the last few weeks. They scored 13, 10 and five points respectively against the Stingers last weekend.
Amazing AbdulLast time out against McGill,
Abdul Kamane of Montreal scored 15 points, had nine rebounds and was a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe. The Gaiters fell 76-63 at home to the Redmen on Jan. 30.
Redmen ResultsMcGill has locked up top spot in the RSEQ with two games remaining. They will head into the RSEQ Final-4 as the number one seed regardless of the outcome of their final two contests. In the Redmen's three wins over Bishop's this year Tychon Carter-Newman and Vincent Dufort have both scored in double figures all three times.
Rod's Rant "It has been fun to play meaningful for games these last few weeks," said Gaiters bench boss
Rod Gilpin. "McGill is going to be a challenge as they are the top team in our league. Our keys will be rebounding and taking care of the ball when we have it."
