SHERBROOKE, Que. – For the first time this season the Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team will step onto the court without playoff aspirations. Following a loss last week in Montreal, Bishop's will fail to qualify for the post-season, however they have one contest remaining. They will be in Quebec City to face the Laval Rouge et Or on Thursday at 8 p.m.
Drumroll PleaseAs the votes are tabulated to determine conference all-stars and major award winners, a pair of Gaiters seem poised to be included when the hardware is announced on Mar. 9.
Abdul Kamne of Montreal has made his mark not just in Quebec but all across the country. The Vanier College product currently leads the Gaiters in scoring with 13 points per game (6
th in the conference) and rebounding at 7.3 per game good for second in the league. He's also averaging 1.6 steals per game (7
th) and 30.9 minutes per game (7
th).
Fellow Freshman
Nick Harvey of Saint-Bruno, Que. could very well join him on the conference's all-rookie team. He's scoring at a pace of 8.9 points per game and is third in the league with 7.2 rebounds a game.
Steady senior
Jona Bermillo of Montreal put his name into the hat to once again be named a league all-star. He was an all-star in 2013-14 after being named to the all-rookie team in 2012-13. His 12.9 points per game are seventh in the RSEQ and 3.4 assists place him third. He also has 2.1 steals per game and has made the second most three pointers in Quebec through 15 games (32). Add his veteran leadership and 30.3 minutes of court time and he could very well have another plaque to hang on his wall.
Laval is Locked InThe Laval Rouge et Or will finish in fourth place in the league regardless of Thursday's outcome. Their first round opponent in the Final-4 will be the No. 8 McGill Redmen on Friday, Mar. 11.
The last time Bishop's and Laval tipped off, the Gaiters snuck away from Quebec City with a 77-73 victory. The Rouge et Or beat Bishop's in both match-ups in Mitchell Gym this season, the Gaiters will look to return the favour and walk away from Laval with a pair of victories.
Chalk Talk"We are treating this like any other regular season game," said Gaiters bench boss
Rod Gilpin. "There are not the same ramifications but we want to play with pride. We are going to put the line-up on the floor that gives us the best chance to win. I'm sure Laval will want to build confidence and momentum heading into the playoffs."
Last CallThursday night's game will bring the 2015-16 campaign to a close. A few Gaiters will look for their names to be called when the conference all-stars and awards are announced on Mar. 9.
