SHERBROOKE, Que. - The Bishop's Gaiters men's rugby team will start their quest for a seventh Quebec university rugby union championship on Sunday night, Sept. 11, as they visit the Université de Montréal Carabins. Kickoff at the Vincent d'Indy field is set for 6 p.m.
The Gaiters will be looking to avenge a 22-11 loss in last year's provincial semi-final, as the Carabins qualified for the provincial final for the first time since entering the conference in 2012.
Bishop's finished last season with a 4-2-1 regular season record, including a 20-12 win in their only meeting with the Carabins last season, on Oct. 2 at Coulter Field. Overall, the Gaiters hold a 5-3 edge in the head-to-head series with Montreal, but have split their meetings over the past three years.
The Gaiters come into the weekend off a pair of exhibition wins over American opponents. Last Saturday, they scored a last-second try to edge Norwich University (Vt.) 19-17 and followed that up with a 14-0 shutout of the University of Pennsylvania.
Bishop's returns
Lee Hudson (Sutton, Que.), last year's conference MVP, as well as fellow all-star
Shayne Crawford (Lennoxville, Que.), who led the team with five tries in 2015.
Bishop's will play a seven-game regular-season schedule in 2016, having been placed into a division with Montreal and Sherbrooke. They will play a home-and-home against those two teams, with single games against McGill, Concordia and ETS.
After Sunday's game, the Gaiters' home opener is on Friday, Sept. 16, when they host Concordia.
