SHERBROOKE, Que. – Reigning RSEQ University women's basketball player of the year Jessica Lubin scored 17 points and Alexe Dufresne chipped in with 15 as the UQAM Citadins topped the Bishop's Gaiters 66-58 on Friday night in Lennoxville. It was the front end of a home-and-home and was part of the #BellLetsTalk varsity home game series.
UQAM (12-7, 6-3) never trailed and led by as much as 22 before the Gaiters (6-8, 1-6) made a late push that proved to be too little too late.
The Gaiters were unable to take advantage of early foul trouble from a pair of UQAM stars. Lubin (Montreal) played just five minutes in the first half while three-time all-star Queteline Celestin (Cayenne, France) only saw nine minutes of court time.
UQAM led 14-9 after the first frame and 29-20 at the break. The first half was marred by missed opportunities as Bishop's was only able to shoot 27.6 per cent and turned the ball over 12 times while the Citadins committed 13 turnovers.
A refreshed Lubin led the way in the second half as UQAM started to find their stride. They extended their advantage to 52-37 after three stanzas. An early 7-0 run by the Citadins seemed to all but put the nail in to coffin, however Bishop's answered with a 13-0 run of their own to cut the lead to just seven points. It was as close as the Gaiters got as UQAM held on for a 66-58 victory.
Lubin finished with a game-high 17 points on 8-11 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Rookie Dufresne (Rimouski, Que.) added 15.
Leading the way for Bishop's was
Ashley Milhomme (Repentigny, Que. /Collège Montmorency) (Repentigny, Que). She netted 11 points, grabbed three rebounds, had two assists and a steal.
Mara Marchizotti (Buenos Aires, Argentina) scored nine points and had 11 rebounds, including six at the offensive end.
UQAM was able to turn 25 Bishop's turnovers into 24 points while the Gaiters only mustered 13 points off the 24 Citadins miscues.
The Gaiters finished the game at 36.1 per cent from the floor (22-61) while UQAM fired at a rate of 47.7 per cent (27-57).
The Gaiters won't have time to dwell on their loss as these two teams complete their home-and-home on Saturday in Montreal. Tip-off is at 5 p.m. and can be seen online at

Friday's contest was part of the #BellLetsTalk initiative. Bishop's was one of 53 U SPORTS institutions participating and Friday's contest was one of 100 nation-wide events to help end the stigma and keep the conversation going leading into #BellLetsTalk day on Wednesday, Jan. 25.
