SHERBROOKE, Que. - The Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team continues their non-conference play this weekend as they travel to Halifax for the Centennial Tournament. They start tournament play on Friday against the Saint Mary's Huskies, take on the Brock Badgers on Saturday and close out on Sunday against the host Dalhousie Tigers. The Friday and Saturday games tip off at 4 p.m. (all times Eastern), with Sunday's match set for an 11 a.m. start.
The Gaiters (2-0) were off for the Thanksgiving weekend, after opening non-conference play with a pair of wins in Northern Ontario. They defeated Algoma 72-50 and Nipissing 76-46, with
Maude Archambault (Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que./Collège Montmorency)'s 42 points over the two games leading the Gaiters.
The Gaiters played a pair of tournaments in Atlantic Canada last season, and came out winners of both, winning the Helen Campbell Tournament in Fredericton and the Marie's Mini Mart Fall Classic in St. John's, N.L.
The Saint Mary's Huskies, who the Gaiters play on Friday, went 20-10 overall (15-5 AUS) last year and qualified for the AUS semi-finals, where they fell to Acadia. Friday will be the Huskies' first game action of 2017-18. The teams have played nine teams previously, with Bishop's holding a 6-3 lead, but the last matchup was 11 years ago, a 72-55 Gaiter win at the Concordia tournament on Dec. 30, 2006.
Saturday's foe, the Brock Badgers, went 13-16 overall (8-11 OUA) last season and are also starting non-conference play this weekend. The teams have split eight previous meetings, with the last matchup being a 63-45 win for the Badgers at the Mitchell Gym in the 2013 Shoot for the Cure tournament.
On Sunday, the Gaiters close out tournament play as they take on the host Dalhousie Tigers. The Tigers are 0-3 on the season, having dropped all three games at the Classique des Citadins in Montreal. The teams last met in 2016 at the Helen Campbell Tournament in Fredericton, a 53-45 Gaiter victory
The Gaiters open conference play on Saturday, Nov. 4, as they host the UQAM Citadins at the Mitchell Gym.
