Men’s Basketball: Gaiters looking for capital gains at House-Laughton tourney

SHERBROOKE, Que. - The Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team continues their non-conference play this weekend as they head to Ottawa for the House-Laughton invitational in Ottawa. The Gaiters will be in action on Friday at 8 p.m. as they take on the host Carleton Ravens, followed by a matchup on Saturday at 6 p.m. against the Acadia Axemen.

The Gaiters (0-5) were swept on their trip to British Columbia last week, falling 92-84 to the University of Victoria, 99-92 to UBC and 111-84 to Alberta. Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) led Bishop's over the three games, averaging 17 points and six rebounds per game, while David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert) averaged 12 points last weekend, and Yassin Naji (Lunel, France/Lycée Pothier Orleans) 11.

Overall this season, Kamane is leading the Gaiters with 14.8 points per game, while Joany Castor-Thadal has averaged 12.2 and David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert) 10.6.

The Ravens, Bishop's opponent on Friday, are winners of the last seven Final 8 national championships. They went 30-1 against USports opposition last season, 19-0 in league play. This year, they are 3-0 in non-conference play, after sweeping through the Guy Vetrie invitational in Victoria, B.C. Friday's game will be the first meeting between the teams since Oct. 18, 2015, an 88-60 win for the Ravens at the House-Laughton tournament in Ottawa.

Acadia, who the Gaiters play on Saturday, are 2-1 on the season, with wins over McMaster and McGill sandwiching a loss to the host Calgary Dinos at the Calgary Cup last weekend. The Axemen went 13-18 last year (10-10 AUS) as they qualified for the AUS semi-final. The Axemen hold a 10-5 edge in the series overall, but the Gaiters took the last matchup between the teams, a 79-68 win at the 2015 House-Laughton Invitational in Ottawa.

After this weekend, the Gaiters will return home to host the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday, Oct. 20.
