THIS WEEK: The Bishop's Gaiters men's rugby team begins their 2017 playoff quest at home on Sunday afternoon as they host crosstown rivals Sherbrooke Vert & Or at Coulter Field. Kickoff is set for 2:15 p.m.
THE RECORDS: The Gaiters enter the playoffs as the second seed in the "2-3-6" division, after posting a 4-3 record and earning 20 points. The Vert & Or finished third in the "1-4-5" division, with an 0-6-1 record. They tied their last game, 27-27 against ETS, on Oct. 20.
BRACKETOLOGY: The winner of this quarter-final will take on the ETS Pirhanas, pennant-winners of the "1-4-5" division, on Friday, Nov. 3, in Montreal. Meanwhile, the McGill Redmen visits the Montreal Carabins on Sunday in the other quarter-final, with the winner facing Concordia the following week.
LAST TIME OUT: The Concordia Stingers spoiled the Gaiters' Seniors Day with a 57-22 win at Coulter Field on Sunday. The Stingers opened the scoring just three minutes into the game, and led 31-3 at halftime. The Gaiters replied with three tries in the second half, but were unable to complete the comeback, suffering their third straight loss.
Josh Bray (Lennoxville, Que./Bishop's College School) had a try, a conversion and a penalty goal for the Gaiters, while
Kobie Welch (Vaughan, Ont./Bill Crothers S.S.) and
Paul Gehrig (Palma de Mallorca, Spain/Agora Portals) also scored tries. A conversion by
Long Tim Nixon (Hong Kong/West Island School) rounded out the scoring for BIshop's.
WHEN LAST WE MET: The Gaiters got tries from
Patrick Currie (Saint John, N.B./Saint John H.S. ),
Tyler Murphy (Bromont, Que. ),
Brock Spencer (Langley, B.C./Sacred Heart (Ottawa)) and
Kobie Welch (Vaughan, Ont./Bill Crothers S.S.) as they defeated the Sherbrooke Vert & Or 25-21 in Sherbrooke on Sept. 30.
Josh Bray (Lennoxville, Que./Bishop's College School) rounded out the scoring for Bishop's with a conversion and a penalty goal.
STAR SYSTEM: The Gaiters had two players named First Team RSEQ all-stars this week:
Josh Bray (Lennoxville, Que./Bishop's College School) and
Carter Filion (St. Catharines, Ont./Ridley College). Bray led the Gaiters in scoring with 53 points on three tries, eight penalty goals and seven conversions and won man of the match honours twice this season. Filion, a co-captain of the Gaiters, scored three tries this season and also won man of the match honours twice.
