Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) had his second 20-point game in as many days, but it was not enough for the Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team, who fell 99-92 to the UBC Thunderbirds on the first day of the UBC Invitational in Vancouver. Kamane had a team-high 21 points on 6-for-12 shooting and was 8-for-12 from the free-throw line.
The Thunderbirds (1-0) led throughout the game, and were up 24-11 after the first quarter, and 55-36 at halftime. The Gaiters (0-4) chipped away at the lead in the late stages, as they went over 90 points in regulation time for the first time since Dec. 28, 2014.
Alex Boise finished with 18 points for the Gaiters, while
Yassin Naji (Lunel, France/Lycée Pothier Orleans) added 14,
David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert) chipped in 12 and
Kasey Paul-Buzas (Montreal, Que./) scored 11. The Gaiters shot 45 per cent from the field, compared to 58 per cent for UBC.
The T-Birds out rebounded Bishop's 38-35, with Kamane's nine boards leading the visitors.
The Gaiters close out their great trek to B.C. on Saturday, as they face the Alberta Golden Bears at UBC. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. (5 p.m. local time).
