LENNOXVILLE, Que. –
Tyler Murphy (Bromont, Que./Massey Vanier H.S.) led the Gaiters with 10 points but it was not enough to give Bishop's the RSEQ men's rugby title as they fell 22-20 to the Concordia Stingers on a windy day in Montreal.
How it Happened
The Gaiters open the scoring in the 30
th minute, as
Robert McGovern (Brigham, Que./Champlain College Lennoxville) found the end zone after a missed penalty kick into the wind by Murphy.
Ten minutes later Concordia evened it up, 7-7. Then the Stingers took the lead 12-7, as the conversion by Jonathan Banks bounced off the uprights.
Patrick Lawton (Halifax, U.K./Queen Ethelburga's College) pushed his way in for a try in the 30
th minute of action, to put the Gaiters on top and with the 14-12 lead at the halftime break.
Bishop's once again opened the scoring in the second half, Murphy booted in a penalty to extend their lead to five (17-12) with 30 minutes left to play.
Concordia took the 19-17 lead with 20 minutes to play. With time ticking down, the Gaiters went for the penalty and Murphy nailed it, to regain the lead 20-19. But their lead was short lived as the Stingers kick a penalty of their own. Bishop's pushed in the final minutes but Concordia held on to win the RSEQ Championship 22-20.
