LENNOXVILLE, Que. –
Kevin Davis' (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor H.S.) double-double led the Bishop's Gaiters to a 78-75 win over the UQAM Citadins in RSEQ men's basketball action, Saturday. The fifth-year point guard scored 19 points and added 13 rebounds as the Gaiters opened conference play with a wild win in front of a raucous crowd at the Mitchell Gym.
The game featured seven ties and eight lead changes, as the Gaiters led 17-12 after the first quarter, trailed 39-32 at halftime, and led 58-57 after three quarters. In the fourth, Bishop's took the lead for good on a three-pointer by
Yassin Naji (Lunel, France/Lycee Pothier Orleans) with 5:39 to go, making it 67-65, and a three-point play by Davis on the next possession extended the lead to 70-65. Davis made three key free throws down the stretch to put the game away as the Gaiters withstood a late UQAM charge.
Also leading the Gaiters (5-3 overall, 1-0 RSEQ) was
Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College), who had 17 points and eight rebounds.
Jordan Thornhill (Montreal, Que./John Abbott College) came off the bench to add 13 points. Davis, for his part, added six assists and two blocks to his stat line, which also included going 8-for-9 from the free-throw line.
For UQAM (3-5 overall, 0-2 RSEQ), Jerry Joseph scored 19 points, while Alix Lochard and Ibrahima Sylla had 14 each with Christopher Adu chipping in 10.
The Gaiters shot 27-for-62 from the field (43.5 per cent), while UQAM was 31-for-75 (41.3 per cent). Bishop's went to the line 29 times, hitting 18, while UQAM was 8-for-15 from the charity stripe.
The Gaiters are back in action on Thursday, as they visit McGill in Montreal, and they return home on Saturday, when they will take on Laval at the Mitchell Gym. Both games are set for 8 p.m. tipoffs.
