LENNOXVILLE, QC – Ten Laval Rouge et Or players saw 10 minutes or more of court time on Saturday as the nation's top ranked team used their depth to beat the Bishop's Gaiters 68-38 in RSEQ University women's basketball action in Mitchell Gym.
The loss drops the Gaiters to 1-2 on the season while the Rouge et Or remain undefeated at 3-0.
Metchline Gabelus (Montreal, Que./Champlain College St-Lambert) of the Gaiters played 37 minutes and posted nine points, five rebounds and two assists. Gaiters' forward
Marie Berrouette (Montreal, Que./Dawson College) led both teams in rebounds with 10, while
Maude Archambault (St-Augustine-de-Desmaures, Que./Cegep de Montmorency),
Ashley Milhomme (Repentigny, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) and
Eve-Marie Houle (Chateau-Richer, Que./Cegep de Ste-Foy) all knocked down threes for the Gaiters.
The Rouge et Or led 15-8 after one quarter, 31-14 at the half and 49-25 as they entered the final stanza en route to their 68-38 win. They outscored Gaiters 20-2 in second chance points. The Rouge et Or also took full advantage of their depth. They scored 39 points off the bench. Marie-Pier Champagne tallied 12 points for Laval and was the only player to reach double figures.
"I was happy with our first half performance," said Gaiters' head coach
Craig Norman. "They killed us on the offensive glass and we didn't play defense for the full 24 seconds. We got worn down in the second half and started to relent. I was happy with our effort but I wasn't happy with our mental toughness tonight.
"Give Laval credit, they are a very good basketball team and they kicked our butt, but we will live to fight another day."
