Redmen get revenge beat Gaiters to close out 2018

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – The McGill Redmen outscored the Bishop's Gaiters 23-14 in the final frame en route to a 68-56 victory in RSEQ University Men's Basketball on Saturday night in Mitchell Gym.

The loss drops Bishop's to 3-3 while McGill improves to 3-2 in conference play at the Christmas break.

A 10-0 Redmen run to start the game eliminated any question McGill might be rusty from a nine-day break. Bishop's called timeout, slowly chipped away, and eventually grabbed a two-point lead in the second stanza. The teams entered halftime tied at 28.

Another burst from McGill to start the second half was halted by the Gaiters who were able to stay within striking distance down just 45-42 after three. The Redmen rolled in the fourth on the heels of floor general Alex Paquin. He scored 13 of his 19 points in the quarter and controlled the game at the offensive end.

McGill's Avery Cadogan led all scorers with 26 points including a 6-8 performance from three-point range.

Four Gaiters scored in double figures led by Nervens Demosthene (Terrebonne, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) who scored 16. Kevin Davis (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor H.S.), Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) and Joany Castor Thadal (Montreal, Que./Champlain Collge St-Lambert) each had 10. Kamane and Emile Babin (Rimouski, Que./Cegep Sainte-Foy) each grabbed 10 rebounds.

Bishop's out-rebounded McGill 53-37 but turned the ball over 25 times to the Redmen's 12. McGill turned that into 30 points. Bishop's was also a measly 7-17 from the charity stripe.

"We stopped doing what we were doing well in the last 17 minutes of the first half," said Gaiters' Head Coach Rod Gilpin. "I think we beat ourselves tonight.

"I'm not overly thrilled at 3-3 but it could be worse."

Bishop's is now off until the New Year. They are next in action on Thursday Jan. 10 in Montreal when they face the Concordia Stingers.
