Gaiters Grind past Rouge et Or on Sunday

Box Score QUEBEC CITY – Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) knocked down a three pointer with just over three and a half minutes remaining to give the Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team momentum and propel them to an 80-74 victory over the Laval Rouget et Or on Sunday afternoon in Quebec City. The win clinches an RSEQ University playoff berth for the Gaiters, who return to the post-season after missing out the two previous campaigns.

Sunday's contest was a make-up for the Jan. 5th game that was postponed due to inclement weather.

Early on was a feeling out process for both teams. Laval led 16-15 after the first quarter while the Gaiters tied the game at 37 heading into the halftime break. Joany Castor Thadal (Saint-Leonard, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert) connected on three free throws, as the third frame wound down to give Bishop's a 56-53 advantage heading into the final frame.

The Gaiters controlled most of the final stanza as they extended their lead to double digits early in the quarter, however were not able to put Laval away.  The Rouge et Or kept climbing back and scoring at pivotal moments to stay within reach, but Bishop's held strong and after Kamane connected from long range Bishop's seemingly finished Laval off. After a few late baskets and Bishop's went onto an 80-74 win.

With the win Bishop's moves to 5-8 on the year in the RSEQ while Laval falls to 6-6.  The Gaiters clinch a playoff berth with the win but have their eyes on Laval who is just two points ahead of Bishop's in the standings, although Laval has a game in-hand.

McGill continues to be the class of the conference at 11-2, while Concordia is at 8-5 and UQAM is now officially eliminated at 2-11.

Next up Bishop's (5-8 RSEQ, 5-18) and Laval (6-6 RSEQ, 10-11) meet again on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Mitchell Gym.  The contest becomes the biggest of the year for the Gaiters if they hope to leapfrog the Rouge et Or into third place.
