Coming off the heels of Friday win over No. 3 Laval, the Bishop's Gaiters could not make it two Top-10 wins in as many days as they dropped a 70-46 decision to the No. 6-ranked McGill Martlets in Quebec University women's basketball action on Saturday in Montreal. The Gaiters were doomed by a poor start, as they trailed 16-6 after the first quarter and 40-22 at halftime.
Bishop's (14-11, 7-8 RSEQ) was led by
Maude Archambault (Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que./Collège Montmorency), who scored 13 points, including four three-pointers, her largest number of triples since Oct. 22 against UNBC.
Edith Noblecilla (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Santo Domingo de Guzmain) was the only other Gaiter in double figures, as she scored 10 points and had a team-high four assists.
McGill (19-5, 10-4 RSEQ) got 17 points from Frédérique Potvin, while Gladys Hakizimana had 16 and Alex Kiss-Rusk chipped in with 12. Rusk also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
The Martlets hit 42 per cent of their shots, while holding Bishop's to 32.8 per cent.
With the loss, the Gaiters fall to 7-8 in league play and can now do no better than third place in the conference, meaning they will have to travel for their semi-final game. McGill is one-half game ahead of Laval at the top of the league, while the Gaiters are 1.5 games ahead of fourth-place UQAM (5-9). Any Gaiter win or UQAM loss in the last week of the season will clinch third place for Bishop's.
The Gaiters close out the regular season on Friday, Feb. 23 as they host the Concordia Stingers at the Mitchell Gym, starting at 6 p.m.
