MONTREAL – An 8-8 conference record, six wins over U SPORTS top-10 teams and a playoff berth for the first time since 2012 were all factors that led to Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball head coach Craig Norman being named as the 2017-18 RSEQ University Coach of the Year in just his second season at the helm.  The program's turnaround was evident on Wednesday when the RSEQ released its all-stars and major award winners as three other Gaiters also earned accolades.
 
Fifth-year seniors Edith Noblecilla (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Santo Domingo de Guzmain) and Mara Marchizotti (Buenos Aires, Argentina/) were both named to the RSEQ first all-star team while freshman Marie-Evrardine Berrouette (Montreal, Que./Dawson College) earned an all-rookie team selection.
 
Noblecilla finished the year as the Gaiters' leading scorer with 12.8 points per game (6^th in RSEQ). Her 5.4 assists per game placed her well atop the RSEQ standings and second in all of U SPORTS. She was also the conference's top thief with 2.1 steals per game. Rounding out her versatile year, she recorded 5.6 rebounds per game (13^th in RSEQ) and was sixth the country in minutes played at 34.6 per game (2^nd in RSEQ).
 
Mara Marchzotti also kept her best for last. After helping Argentina qualify for the World Cup this summer Marchizotti returned to Bishop's poised to finish her career in style. She averaged 11.8 points per game (8^th in RSEQ) and 7.3 rebounds per game (5^th in RSEQ). Her 1.3 blocks per game placed her third in the conference and her 41.9 percent field goal percentage was seventh.
 
Rookie Marie-Evrardine Berrouette (Montreal, Que./Dawson College) transitioned to the U SPORTS level almost seamlessly.  The former Dawson Blue led the Gaiters in rebounding at 8.6 per game (4^th in RSEQ). She was also third in the RSEQ in steals at 1.8 per contest.
 
For his part Norman earns Bishop's first women's basketball Coach of the Year honour since Rod Gilpin won three in a row from 2003-2005.  He will move on as the RSEQ nominee for the Peter Ennis Award.  Norman was named the U SPORTS (CIS at the time) Coach of the Year in 2004 when he was at the helm of the RMC Paladins men's team.

Basketball universitaire féminin RSEQ
Alex Kiss-Rusk est l'athlète par excellence !
 
Montréal, 28 février 2018 – À la veille du championnat provincial universitaire de basketball féminin présenté par Lait's Go Sport, le RSEQ dévoile ses étudiants-athlètes les plus méritants de la dernière saison et les titulaires des équipes d'étoiles.
Alex Kiss-Rusk des Martlets de McGill est l'Athlète par excellence du RSEQ.  L'athlète de 23 ans originaire de Beaconsfield figure au troisième rang des marqueurs du circuit avec 14,3 points par match, au premier rang pour les rebonds (11,8) et au quatrième rang pour les tirs bloqués (1,2) par match. La joueuse de centre de 6 pieds et 4 pouces a inscrit 22,9 pour cent des points de McGill et elle a amassée 31,1 pour cent de leurs rebonds.
Kiss-Rusk, qui a passé l'été avec l'équipe nationale de développement du Canada a joué 32:06 minutes par match et a mené le RSEQ avec 11 doubles-doubles en 16 parties. L'étudiante-athlète dans le programme de travail social a pris le troisième rang pour l'efficacité des tirs (45,3 pour cent grâce à 105 paniers sur 232 tirs). Elle a aussi affiché une efficacité de 52,9 pour cent de la ligne des lancers francs (18 paniers en 34 tirs) et a contribué avec 22 passes décisives, 19 tirs bloqués et 14 interceptions.
La Recrue de l'année au RSEQ est Coralie Dumont et celle-ci a eu une incidence importance avec les Stingers de Concordia et dans le RSEQ dès sa première saison. En 16 matchs, l'avant de Boucherville a joué 31:18 minutes par match. Elle a été la meilleure chez les Stingers avec 6,9 rebonds par match, bon pour le sixième rang dans la conférence. Avec une moyenne de 11,1 points par match, elle a pris le troisième rang de son équipe. Dumont arrive chez les Stingers en provenance des Cavaliers de Champlain-St-Lambert ou elle a été membre de la deuxième équipe d'étoiles collégiale du RSEQ en 2017.
La vétérane de l'équipe féminine de basketball des Citadins, Jessica Lubin, remporte le prestigieux titre de Joueuse défensive de l'année du RSEQ. Celle qui porte le numéro 21 chez les Citadins a littéralement dominé la conférence québécoise. Elle a complété la saison en tête des meilleures marqueuses de la ligue (18 points en moyenne par match), puis s'est révélée être la meilleure pour le nombre de blocs par match (1,4 en moyenne). Elle s'est également révélée être la 2e plus efficace au Québec au chapitre des rebonds (9,6 en moyenne par match) et la 5e meilleure au niveau des passes décisives (3,2 en moyenne par match).
 
L'une des meilleures marqueuses de la ligue à chacune de ses cinq saisons à Laval, Raphaëlle Côté, aussi sélectionnée sur la première équipe d'étoiles du circuit cette année, s'illustre également en dehors du terrain et remporte le prix Leadership et engagement social. En plus d'exceller dans son programme de doctorat en psychologie, Côté s'implique activement au sein du comité de l'Initiative en santé mentale pour les étudiants-athlètes (ISMÉA), un regroupement lancé cette année qui a comme objectif de sensibiliser les étudiants-athlètes à cette réalité, en plus de faciliter l'accès aux ressources mises à leur disposition. La native de Maria doit également intégrer à cet horaire déjà fort chargé un stage non rémunéré à la clinique de psychologie de l'Université Laval, où elle s'occupe de plusieurs patients.
 
Koralie Melançon s'adaptait avec aisance au style universitaire avec le Rouge et Or, l'an passé. Elle obtenait de plus en plus de temps de jeu, au grand plaisir de son entraîneur Guillaume Giroux. Puis, en janvier 2017, lors d'un entraînement, le ligament croisé antérieur de son genou lâchait, mettant ainsi fin à sa saison. Opérée en mars 2017, l'étudiante en chimie mettait beaucoup de sérieux dans sa réadaptation. Si bien que neuf mois plus tard, elle était de retour sur le terrain, prête à aider ses coéquipières et se voit décernée la mention Détermination, persévérance et courage. Elle n'a pas encore retrouvé le même rythme qu'au moment de sa blessure, mais elle travaille très fort tous les jours pour y parvenir.
 
Craig Norman est élu Entraîneur de l'année du basketball universitaire féminin à sa deuxième saison complète à la barre des Gaiters de Bishop's. Il a conduit sa formation à un bilan de 8-8. Sa troupe est de retour en éliminatoire pour la première fois depuis 2012. Le pilote a aussi dirigé deux membres de la première équipe d'étoiles du RSEQ en Édith Noblecilla et Mara Marchizotti (Buenos Aires, Argentina/), ainsi qu'une joueuse de l'équipe d'étoiles des recrues, soit Marie-Evrardine Berrouette (Montreal, Que./Dawson College).
 
L'annonce des honneurs individuels précède les demi-finales qui se tiendront le mercredi 28 février. Pour l'occasion le Rouge et Or de l'Université Laval recevra les Citadins de l'UQAM dès 19h et les Martlets de l'Université McGill seront les hôtes des Gaiters de l'Université Bishop's dès 18h. Les deux équipes gagnantes s'affronteront en finale le samedi 3 mars au domicile de l'équipe ayant terminé avec le meilleur classement au terme de la saison régulière.

RSEQ Women University Basketball
Alex Kiss-Rusk is the player of the year!
 
Montreal, February 28, 2017 – On the eve of the Provincial University Basketball Championship presented by Lait's Go Sport, the RSEQ is proud to announce this season's All-Star Teams and individual award winners.
Alex Kiss-Rusk of the McGill Martlets is the RSEQ player of the year.  A 23-year-old native of Beaconsfield, Que., she ranked third among league leaders in points (14.3), first in rebounds (11.8) and fourth in blocks (1.2) per game. The 6-foot-4 centre accounted for 22.9 per cent of McGill's points scored and 31.1 per cent of their rebounds.
Kiss-Rusk, who spent the summer playing with the Canadian national development team, averaged 32.1 minutes of court time per game, led the Quebec Conference in "double doubles" with 11 in 16 contests and ranked third in field-goal shooting at 45.3 per cent (105/232). She shot 52.9 per cent from the free-throw line (18/34) and contributed 22 assists along with 19 blocks and 14 steals.
The daughter of former McGill all-star basketball players Rick Rusk and Annette Kiss, she is a fifth-year senior majoring in social work after graduating last year with bachelor's degree in psychology.
RSEQ Rookie of the Year Coralie Dumont had a significant impact on the Concordia Stingers and the RSEQ in her first season. In 16 games, the forward from Boucherville, Que. played 31.3 minutes a game. She was the leading rebounder on the Stingers with an average of 6.9 a game. That also ranked her sixth in the conference. With an average of 11.1 points a game, she ranked third in scoring for Concordia. Dumont comes to the Stingers from the Champlain, St. Lambert Cavaliers where she was an RSEQ second team all-star in 2017.
Citadins' veteran Jessica Lubin won the prestigious RSEQ Defensive player of the year. UQAM's number 21, she has literally dominated the Quebec Conference. She has completed the season as the league's top scorer (18 points per game) and has come up as the top blocker (1.4 per game). She also placed second in the RSEQ with 9.6 rebounds per game and fifth with 3.2 assists per game.
 
One of the league's leading scorers in each of her five seasons with Laval and a first-team All-Star this year, Raphaëlle Côté also excels off the court, earning the Leadership and social engagement award. On top of her success in the classroom as she pursues her Psychology Doctorate, Cote is also a committee member for the student athlete mental health of initiative (ISMEA), a new program launched this year geared to raise student-athlete awareness to this cause while also facilitating access to those in need of such support. The Maria, QC native also fits an unpaid internship at the Université Laval psychology clinic into her busy schedule where she handles several patients of her own.
 
Koralie Melançon was adjusting well to the university game last season as she earned more and more playing time from her coach Guillaume Giroux. Then at practice in January 2017, she tore the ACL in her left knee putting a tragic end to her season. Operated in March 2017, the chemistry major fully committed herself to her rehabilitation program and nine months later she was back on the court with her teammates and is the recipient of the Determination, perseverance and courage Award. While still working hard to return to the form she was at prior to her injury, Koralie continues to push more every day to get there.
 
Craig Norman claims his first RSEQ University Women's Basketball Coach of the Year Award in his second full season as the Bishop's Gaiters bench boss.  He led the Gaiters to an 8-8 conference record and a return to the playoffs for the first time since 2012.  Norman also coached two first-team all-stars (Edith Noblecilla (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Santo Domingo de Guzmain) and Mara Marchizotti (Buenos Aires, Argentina/)) and a member of the all-rookie team (Marie-Evrardine Berrouette (Montreal, Que./Dawson College)).
 
The announcement of individual award winners will be made prior to the conference semifinals to be held on Wednesday, February 28 as the Université Laval Rouge et Or will host the UQAM Citadins at 7:00 p.m. and the McGill University Martlets host the Bishop's University Gaiters at 6:00 p.m. The two winners will then square off on Saturday, March 3 on the home court of the team with the best regular-season record.
