MONTREAL – The Bishop's Gaiters men's basketball team was propelled to a 79-56 victory over the UQAM Citadins by veteran duo,
Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) and
David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert). Kamane led the Gaiters with 20 points and seven rebounds and Belanger put up 15 points and nine rebounds in on Thursday night in Montreal.
The Gaiters and Citadins matched-up fairly evenly thought the first frame. Bishop's started to pull ahead in the second but UQAM stuck close, to trail 28-26 at the half. Kamane kept the Gaiters alive with his 13 points in the first half. The Gaiters dominated the third quarter led by
David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert) and Joany Castor-Thadal, who each had six points in the third. Bishop's continued to extend their lead in the fourth frame. UQAM was able to come within six points with seven minutes to play, but their last ditch effort wasn't good enough as the Gaiters pulled away and took the contest 79-56.
Castor-Thadal was the other Gaiter in double figures, he scored 17 points.
Kevin Davis (Baltimore, Md./Digital Harbor H.S.) came off the bench to score eight points and put up three rebounds in 12 minutes.
For the Citadins, Jeffrey Avril led with 12 points and seven rebounds. Ibrahima Sylla had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Bishop's takes the head-to-head contest with UQAM 3-1. The Gaiters (4-8) hold the advantage over UQAM (2-11) for the last playoff spot in the RSEQ.
Next up
Bishop's will play a pair against the Laval Rouge et Or. On Sunday, Feb. 11 they are in Quebec City and will tip-off at 3 p.m. while on Tuesday, Feb. 13 the teams play in Mitchell Gym at 8 p.m.
