Bishop’s Battles Laval in the Big City

SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop's men's basketball team will face Laval in Quebec City on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the PEPS. 
 
Last time out
The Gaiters (4-8) took down the UQAM Citadins (2-11) 79-56 in Montreal on Thursday night. Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) led Bishop's with 20 points and seven rebounds and David Belanger (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-St. Lambert) put up 15 points and nine rebounds.
 
Laval (6-5) lost twice to No. 7 McGill in their last games, they fell 103-81 in Montreal and 68-61 at home. 
 
Previous meetings
Laval has won both of their previous match-ups against the Gaiters; they took the first contest of the year 89-74 in Quebec City and the second 80-70 in Lennoxville. 
 
Who to watch
Bishop's
Kamane leads the conference in scoring by a wide margin.  His 21.6 points per game is 7.5 points more than second place in the RSEQ and places him ninth in Canada. He is also fifth in assists in the conference at 2.7 per game, seventh in rebounding at 6.3 per game and fifth in free throw percentage at 67 percent. Rookie, Nervens Demosthene (Terrebonne, Que. ) is making a name for himself joining the team after the holidays. Through seven games he's averaging 11.0 points per game (10th in RSEQ), 6.4 rebounds per game (sixth in RSEQ) and 2.9 assists per game (third in RSEQ).  Senior forward Belanger averages 11.1 points per game (ninth in RSEQ) while he is the conferences second best rebounder at 8.3 per contest.
 
Laval
Frantson Demosthene averages 13.5 points per game (third in RSEQ) and leads the league in rebounding with 9.1 per game and in steals with 2.5 per game.  Joel Mumba leads the RSEQ with 1 block per game and Alexandre Leclerc is second in assists with 3.1 per game. 
 
Coach's comments
"Laval is an athletic team, is very good in transition and they rebound well," said head coach Rod Gilpin. "Those are the things that we have struggled with against them, so we are going to have to try and limit their scorers in transition and off the offensive glass."

Next Up
Due to stormy weather in January, the Gaiters game on Sunday at Laval is a make up for a game on Jan. 5th.  The game that was to be played on Saturday night in Mitchell gym against Laval will now be played on Tuesday, Feb. 13 in Mitchell Gym at 8 p.m.
