LENNOXVILLE, Que. – The UQAM Citadins proved why they are atop the RSEQ University women's soccer standings on Friday night in Lennoxville. The U SPORTS ninth-ranked team beat the Bishop's Gaiters 3-0.
The Gaiters celebrated four graduating seniors prior to the game.
UQAM did not waist long as Karima Lemire scored in the second minute. Bishop's regrouped and held tough. Heins was between the pipes for the first half and made four saves while Desrochers played the final 45 minutes.
The Citadins used two set plays off corners to add their next two tallies in the 61
st and 69
th minutes. Lemire sent crosses into the box and centre back Ellie Lapointe buried both goals. Lemire also scored UQAM's first.
Lapointe was named game MVP for UQAM and
Kayla Kyle (Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que./John Abbott College) earned game MVP honours for Bishop's.
The loss drops Bishop's to 4-7-2 while UQAM improve to 11-1-1 and clinch first place in the RSEQ. Bishop's is locked into the fifth spot and will miss the playoffs but have guaranteed themselves their best finish since 2002. The Gaiters close out their season on Sunday at Montreal at 1 p.m.
