LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Third-year guard
Nervens Demosthene (Terrebonne, Que./Cegep de Montmorency) knocked down a three-pointer with 10 seconds left to put the Bishop's Gaiters up four and seal a 78-76 Bishop's victory over the UQAM Citadins on Saturday night in Mitchell Gym. It was the Gaiters RSEQ University men's basketball home opener.
Demosthene finished with 22 points on 9-15 shooting, none bigger than the triple at the end of the night.
Jordan Thornhill (Montreal, Que./John Abbott College) tallied a 'double-double' with 14 points and 11 rebounds and
Abdul Kamane (Montreal, Que./Vanier College) also scored 14 to round out the Gaiters in double figures.
After a slow start from both teams, Bishop's didn't get on the board until the six-minute mark of the first quarter, the Gaiters clawed their way back. UQAM led 17-13 after one stanza while Bishop's was up 33-29 at the break. The Gaiters extended their lead to 58-49 after the third quarter. UQAM made a final push and evened the game at 73 with just over a minute to play. A key moment came when Alix Lochard picked up his second unsportsmanlike foul of the game with 1:01 remaining. That ended his night. He scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the loss.
Kamane hit one of the ensuing free-throws, Bishop's got a defensive stop then Demosthene's heroics happened. UQAM answered with a triple of their own, but it was as close as they got and Bishop's went onto a 78-76 victory.
UQAM's Franston Demosthene led all scorers with 27 points.
The win evens the Gaiters record at 1-1 while UQAM falls to 1-2.
The Gaiters will have a quick turnaround as they play McGill on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Mitchell Gym.
