LENNOXVILLE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters were never able to recover from a slow start on Homecoming Friday in Lennoxville. The Ottawa Gee-Gees got the best of them by a final of 28-12 in RSEQ University men's rugby.
The game was chippy from the get-go. Bishop's No.15
Mario Jonker (Saint Maarten/Caribbean International Academy) was injured on the opening play and
Joel Cook (Bentonville, Ark./Brentwood College) was assessed a yellow card just two minutes in.
Ottawa's Sam Mace scored at the 14-minute mark and Nathaniel Maginnis converted.
The Gee-Gee's scored twice more and Maginnis converted both for a 21-0 Ottawa halftime lead.
A different Gaiters team came out of the locker room.
Jack Shaw (Oakville, Ont./Shawnigan Lake School) got things going with a long run for the Gaiters first points of the night.
Tyler Murphy (Bromont, Que./Massey Vanier H.S.) converted. Murphy scored a try himself after the Bishop's pushed along the goal line just seven minutes later. He was unable to convert, but the Gaiters trailed just 21-12 and seemingly had the momentum.
The scrappiness continued midway through the stanza. Ottawa's Jacob Harries was assessed a yellow card in the 59
th minute. Just four minutes after that the Gee-Gees Graeme Neill-Klein was given a straight red card. At the 65-minute mark, Cook picked up his second yellow card.
Ottawa took advantage to score their fourth try of the game and earn the RSEQ bonus point in the 69
th minute.
The game ended with the visiting Gee-Gees on top 28-12.
The loss drops Bishop's to 2-1 (9 points) while Ottawa improves to 2-1 (9 points).
Prior to the game the Bishop's graduating seniors were honoured as they played their last regular season home game on Coulter Field.
Next up for the Gaiters, they make the cross-town trek to play the Sherbrooke Vert et Or (0-2, 1 point) on Friday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m.
