Siciliano sizzles with 38 points as Gaiters beat Concordia to secure second place

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Sophomore Amaiquen Siciliano (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Velez Sarsfield) solidified herself as one of the premier player in the country.  She scored 38 points, the most in the RSEQ since 2006-07 as the Bishop's Gaiters took care of business and beat the Concordia Stingers 93-69 on Thursday night in Mitchell Gym.

The win improves the Gaiters to 9-6 and ensures they finish in second place in the RSEQ with one game remaining. They will host the UQAM Citadins (7-8) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Mitchell Gym in an RSEQ semifinal.  It will be the first Gaiters' post-season women's basketball action in Lennoxville since 2009.

The first half was all Bishop's.  Siciliano scored 26 in the first 20 minutes as the Gaiters paced themselves to a 50-31 advantage at the break.

It was 21-13 after the first quarter then Bishop's exploded for 29 points in the second frame.

Concordia tried to make a game of it in the third as they went on a run and outscored the Gaiters 25-15. That cut the lead to nine at the end of the quarter but it was as close as the Stingers would get.  Bishop's led wire-to-wire and used a massive 28-13 fourth stanza to close out the game and earn the win.

Siciliano added five steals, five rebounds, three assists and a block to round out her stat line.  Rookie Jael Kabunda (Montreal, Que./College Montmorency) put a stamp on her rookie year with yet another "double-double", her fifth of the year with 15 points and 12 rebounds.  Fellow freshman Deborah Aboagye (Montreal, Que.) scored 18.

Caroline Task scored 23 for Concordia, Nelly Owusu had 14 and Nikita Telesford added 11 points to round out the Stingers in double figures.

Concordia turned the ball over 27 times that led to 30 Gaiter points. Bishop's also out-scored Concordia 46-26 in the paint.

Next up the Gaiters and Citadins will tip-off at 4 p.m. on Saturday in Montreal in a game that has no implications in the standings. They meet will meet again with everything on the line on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Mitchell Gym.
