LENNOXVILLE, Que. –
Axel Montgomery (Toronto, ON/Shawnigan Lake School) booted through his fifth penalty on the last play of the game to propel the Bishop's Gaiters to a 25-23 victory over the Montreal Carabins on Saturday night on Coulter Field.
The game capped a day of 40
th anniversary celebrations for the men's rugby program.
Montgomery accounted for 20 of the Gaiters 25 points on the night. He also converted the Gaiters' lone try and was successful on a drop kick early in the second half.
The boisterous crowd was erupted as Bishop's stole a scrum moments earlier to prevent Montreal from ending the game. When the referee awarded Bishop's the penalty they immediately pointed to posts and Montgomery made no mistake from 24-yards out.
Montgomery was one of the Gaiters' seniors celebrated prior to kickoff.
Bishop's scored early but the Carabins, despite not winning a game all year, hung around. They took advantage of Gaiters' miscues in the second half and turned a 10-point deficit into a one-point lead after a 71
st minute try. Bishop's picked up both a yellow and red card and were forced to play the final 25 minutes with just 14 men on the pitch. Montgomery's magic on the final play flipped the script one more time, this one to benefit the hosts for the 25-23 victory.
The win improves Bishop's to 3-2-0 (13 points). They currently sit in fourth place in the conference with one game remaining. Montreal falls to 0-5-0 (3 points).
The Gaiters are back on the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 21 when they travel to Montreal to face the McGill Redbirds (2-2-0, 9 points). Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
