LENNOXVILLE, Que. –
Jet Wilson (Stouffville, ON/) blitzed and forced a fumble with a thunderous hit at the 7:50 mark of the third quarter, Alexandre Prevost found the loose ball and scampered 17 yards for a touchdown. That opened the flood gates for the Bishop's Gaiters who scored 16 third quarter points en route to a 40-9 victory over the Acadia Axemen on Homecoming Saturday in Lennoxville.
O'Shae Ho-Sang got the boisterous 2305 fans at Coulter Field on their feet with a 33-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter. He caught what appeared to be the Gaiters second major just minutes later, but it was negated due to a penalty.
A
Xavier Gervais (Ottawa, ON/Cégep de l'Outaouais) 23-yard field goal and a safety on each side rounded out the first half scoring with Bishop's up 12-2 at the break.
The Gaiters' defense also set the tone early.
Yani Gouadfel (Mitry-Mory, France/Cégep de Thetford) and
Gabriel Royer (Lawrenceville, QC/Cégep de Sherbrooke) each recorded interceptions in the first half where the wind caused havoc.
After the break it was all Bishop's. Following Prevost's major,
Mason McGriskin (North Bay, ON/West Ferris S.S.) added a 2-yard quarterback sneak to all but seal the game with a quarter to go.
Acadia scored early in the fourth when Dante Tabacu plunged in from a yard out after Gaiters' penalties gave the Axemen a short field.
Bishop's starting pivot
Justin Quirion (Saint-Georges, QC/CEGEP de Levis) connected with
Gabin Leux (Vannes, FRANCE/CEGEP de Thetford) for a highlight-reel 36-yard touchdown to respond to the Acadia score. Gervais, who is also the third-string quarterback, rounded out the scoring when he hooked up with
Ryan Leblanc (Moncton, NB/Moncton H.S.) with 26 seconds left to make the final 40-9.
Bishop's moves to 2-1 on the year while Acadia falls to 1-3 in the AUS standings.
Quirion finished 14-23 for 213 yards, a touchdown and interception. Leux had six catches for 111 yards and the major.
Wilson ended the game with 3 tackles including two sacks and two forced fumbles, one being the blocked punt. He was named Bishop's player of the game.
For Acadia, Tabacu was 8-14 for 82 yards and an interception while Riley Naujoks went 6-14 for 50 yards and two picks. Maximus Ramirez rushed 12 times for 51 yards and was named Axeman player of the Game.
Next week Bishop's travels to Mount Allison to face the Mounties (1-2) on Saturday, Sept. 23 and Acadia has their bye.
