LENNOXVILLE, QC – Bishop's University announced today that after having competed in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) for eight seasons, its football program will transition back to the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) for the 2026 season.    
 
The move comes after careful consideration and constructive discussions with other AUS football programs regarding significant sector-wide financial constraints and increasing travel costs that are affecting the sustainability of all programs involved. In this context, the additional travel costs associated with Bishop's participation in the AUS could no longer be supported. It was therefore decided that the football participation agreement under which Bishop's was playing in the AUS, and which will expire on November 30, will not be renewed.
 
"We appreciate the very real financial pressures faced by our AUS partners and are grateful for the remarkable collaboration and support they have demonstrated for the past eight years", said Sebastien Lebel-Grenier, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Bishop's University. "This move is the next step in our program's storied history that dates back to the 1800s.  We are happy to be returning to the RSEQ and offering our student-athletes the opportunity to compete with other Quebec football programs.  Bishop's remains committed to providing an outstanding student-athlete experience and being an active contributor to Canadian university sports."

As we look ahead, we are excited to reconnect with the RSEQ and continue building competitive and meaningful experiences for our student-athletes."

"Our football member schools in Atlantic Canada and Bishop's University Athletics approached this process collaboratively and with a clear understanding of the realities facing universities across the country. We wish the student-athletes and coaching staff continued success as they return to RSEQ competition."
 
Bishop's University competed in the AUS for eight seasons, winning the Loney Bowl as conference champions in 2024.  
 
The RSEQ will begin its scheduling process for the 2026 season in the coming weeks.

Retour du football des Gaiters de Bishop's au RSEQ en 2026

LENNOXVILLE, QC – L'Université Bishop's a annoncé aujourd'hui qu'après avoir évolué pendant huit saisons au sein de Sport universitaire de l'Atlantique (SUA), son programme de football effectuera une transition vers le Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) pour la saison 2026.
 
Cette décision fait suite à une réflexion approfondie et à des discussions constructives avec les autres programmes de football du SUA concernant d'importantes contraintes financières sectorielles et l'augmentation des coûts de déplacement qui compromettent la viabilité de tous les programmes concernés. Dans ce contexte, les coûts supplémentaires liés à la participation de Bishop's au SUA ne pouvaient plus être assumés. Il a donc été décidé de ne pas renouveler l'entente de participation au football en vertu de laquelle Bishop's évoluait au SUA et qui arrivera à échéance le 30 novembre.
 
« Nous sommes conscients des pressions financières bien réelles auxquelles nos partenaires du SUA font face et nous leur sommes reconnaissants pour la remarquable collaboration et le soutien dont ils ont fait preuve au cours des huit dernières années », a déclaré Sébastien Lebel-Grenier, principal et vice-chancelier de l'Université Bishop's. « Ce changement constitue la prochaine étape dans l'histoire riche de notre programme, qui remonte aux années 1800. Nous sommes heureux de revenir au RSEQ et d'offrir à nos étudiants-athlètes l'occasion de rivaliser avec d'autres programmes de football québécois. Bishop's demeure résolue à offrir une expérience exceptionnelle aux étudiants-athlètes et à contribuer activement au sport universitaire canadien. »

L'Université Bishop's a évolué au SUA pendant huit saisons, remportant le Loney Bowl en tant que championne de conférence en 2024.
 
Le RSEQ entamera son processus de planification pour la saison 2026 dans les prochaines semaines.
