Gaiters' Gore, Turner and Conn selected in CFL Draft

Gore, a 6'0 200 lb. slotback, was named the Bishop's University Male Athlete of the Year this year, after a season that saw him lead the Gaiters   in the regular season with 32 catches for 496 yards and five touchdowns, and was third on the team with 7.0 special teams tackles (five solo, four assisted). In addition, he posted a career-high 114 yards on seven catches in the Gaiters' playoff loss at Montreal on November 7. Over his career, Gore has gained 1172 yards receiving on 72 catches in 29 regular-season games, and he currently has a 21-game pass catching streak.

Gore signed a tryout agreement with the Green Bay Packers last week.

Turner, a 5'9 185 lb. wide receiver and kick returner, is a three-time Quebec University Football League all-star at kick returner. He led Canadian Interuniversity Sport in punt returns last season with an average of 20.4 yards per return, including two touchdowns. The Brampton, Ont. native also led the QUFL with an average of 21.4 yards on kickoff returns.

Turner has scored six kick return touchdowns (three on kickoffs, three on punts) in his career, and he has amassed 2,379 career all-purpose yards. He averages 27.9 yards per kickoff return and 11.6 yards per punt return in his career. In 2007, he set a CIS record with three kickoff returns for touchdowns.

Turner signed a tryout agreement with the Chicago Bears earlier this week.

Conn, a 6'3 230 lb. linebacker, made 23 tackles last season (20 solo, six assisted), and has 51.5 tackles (46 solo, 11 assisted) in his career. He was second on the Gaiters with 5.0 tackles for loss last year, and has made three sacks in his career.

Conn has also performed some kicking duties with the Gaiters, and is 7-for-11 lifetime in field goal kicking with his longest being a 40-yarder. He scored his first career touchdown on October 24 as he caught a pass on a fake field goal attempt in the Gaiters' 21-16 win over then-No. 4 Montreal.

Including today's selection of Gore, the B.C. Lions have drafted 11 Gaiters all-time, and three in the past two seasons. Last year, the Lions drafted both Jamall Lee (3rd overall) and James Yurichuk (4th overall) in the first round. In addition to Lee and Yurichuk, former Gaiter Dan McCullough is currently the Lions' starting long snapper. The Lions' 11 selections are the second-highest of any CFL team, trailing only the 13 made by the Montreal Alouettes.

Turner is the seventh Gaiter all-time to be drafted by the Argonauts, and the first since linebacker Chris Wilson, who was picked in the 5th round (40th overall) in 1992. Turner will join former teammate Kyle Jones on the Argonauts. Jones signed with Toronto last season as a free agent.

Conn is the 13th Gaiter to be selected by the Alouettes, and the first since linebacker Francis Bellefroid was picked 45th overall (6th round) in 1997. The Alouettes 13 drafted Gaiters includes Larry Smith, the current Alouettes' President, who was the first overall pick in 1972 and Nick Arakgi, who was a territorial exemption in 1979.

The Bishop's Gaiters open their 2010 season on Saturday, September 4 at 7 p.m. as they host the Concordia Stingers.
