THE MATCHUP: The Bishop's Gaiters will welcome the Saint Mary's Huskies to Coulter Field for the annual Homecoming Game on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Coulter Field. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
THE RECORDS: The Gaiters are 0-3 on the year, having fallen to Sherbrooke, No. 1-ranked Montreal, and McGill to start the year. The Huskies have a 1-1 mark, as they scored a come-from-behind 32-29 win over Mount Allison last week.
NOTHING BUT NET: Saturday's game will be webcast live at
www.gaiters.ca/webcast, with live stats available on the web at www.sportetudiant-stats.com/livestats/bishops/xlive.htm. Score updates will alsobe available on Twitter, by following @BishopsGaiters.
LAST TIME OUT: The Gaiters fell 43-9 to the McGill Redmen last week in Montreal, as Anthony Deschamps scored a pair of touchdowns for the hosts. The Gaiters trailed 7-2 after the first quarter, and 16-2 at halftime before McGill pulled away in the second half. For Bishop's, rookie quarterback
Jaeden Marwick threw his first career touchdown pass, a 20-yard third-quarter scoring strike to Alex Bouffard. Marwick went 15-for-27 for 160 yards after entering the game in the second quarter.
THE SERIES: The Huskies lead the all-time series 3-1. The first meeting came in the 1988 Atlantic Bowl, where AUAA champions Saint Mary's picked up a 44-10 win over the OQIFC champion Gaiters at Huskies Stadium in Halifax. The teams did not meet again until 2003, after the introduction of the Quebec-Atlantic interlock. This will be the Huskies' third trip to Coulter Field, with Saint Mary's winning in 2003 and 2008.
WHEN LAST WE MET: The Gaiters came from behind to score a 23-17 win over the Huskies in Halifax on Sept. 26, 2015, defating Saint Mary's for the first time in program history. A 43-yard touchdown pass from
Mathieu Demers to Trevon Millings proved decisive, as the Gaiters came back from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to pick up the win.
Jamall Hyman-Hamilton also scored a touchdown for Bishop's, while a pair of field goals by Vincent Dubé and a safety touch rounded out the scoring.
INTERLOCK AND KEY: This weekend features the annual Quebec-Atlantic interlock series. The Gaiters are 7-8 overall against the AUS since the series began in 2002, but have won four of their past five games, dating back to 2009. Overall, the Quebec conference is 64-23 against the AUS, and swept all four of last year's games.
CFL GAITERS: With alumni the focus of this weekend at Bishop's, it bears noting that 10 former Gaiters are currently plying their trade in the Canadian Football League. The most recent addition to that list was Justin Warden, who was added to Winnipeg's practice roster two weeks ago. The Purple and Silver tentacles extend through seven of the CFL's nine teams (sorry, Saskatchewan and Hamilton), with the three Gaiters on the B.C. Lions (Shawn Gore, Stephen Adekolu and Adrian Clarke) the most in one spot. There are two former Gaiters (Jermaine Gabriel, James Yurichuk) on the Toronto Argonauts, with one each at Ottawa (Dan West), Calgary (Junior Turner), Edmonton (Elie Ngoyi) and Montreal (Ryan White), along with Warden in Winnipeg.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters go back to Montreal on Saturday, Oct. 1, as they visit the Concordia Stingers. Kickoff at Concordia Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
