DEBBIE SAVOY-MOREL

B.B.A. ‘75
Golf

Debbie is considered to be the finest women’s golfer ever to attend Bishop’s University. While the opportunity did not exist to represent Bishop’s in the old QUAA, Debbie distinguished herself by being selected to the Canadian Amateur team 7 times, as well as to the Quebec provincial team 14 times.

Debbie was very active in campus life as a student serving as President of the Business Club, working as a Residence Assistant and playing for the Polar Bear women’s hockey team. Debbie also found the time to be very active in the Athletic Society and was selected Intramural Athlete of the Year in 1974.

While Debbie won numerous awards as an amateur, it is as a teaching professional that she has made her mark. Recognized as one of the best known women golf professionals in Canada, Debbie contributed to developing the Quebec Golf Association training program for elite golfers in 1995. In 2002, Debbie won the prestigious Jean Paul Alary award given to the “Most Sportsmanlike Professional” in Quebec. This award’s criteria can be used to best describe Debbie- “Class ‘A’ professional, reputation without reproach, active participation in the Quebec Professional Golf Association’s activities, exemplary attitude, great personality as well as being extremely helpful towards her colleagues.”

Debbie has been the golf analyst on Reseau des Sports (RDS), where her teaching talents have been showcased for several years on Acura World of Golf. In 1992 - 1993 she was chosen by Golf Magazine as a club tester and since then has written instructional articles for many golf magazines such as AGP - Golf International, National Post, & Journal les Affaires.

Debbie’s career dream came true in 2006 when she made an instructional DVD for golfers of all levels. This DVD ‘’ A Swing for a lifetime’’ was the first one in the world to be filmed in both French and English.

Debbie has been the Head Professional at Céline Dion’s prestigious “Club de Golf le Mirage” since 1997 and she enjoys the privilege of being Céline’s private golf coach. When asked, Debbie is proud to say that her most rewarding achievement is her family, husband Denis Morel, retired NHL referee, and their two children, Shawn and Kimberley.
