Trevor Bennett is considered one of the biggest talents to don a Gaiter basketball uniform. Trevor displayed his leadership and skill for Bishop’s from 1977 to 1982.
The Toronto native led the team in rebounding for five straight years. Two of those seasons he led the conference and in 1980-81 he was the nation’s top rebounder, averaging 13.4 per game. Trevor helped lead Bishop’s to the QUAA championship in the 1978-79 season. Bennett was also a 4 time QUAA conference all star.
Bennett contributed offensively as well, leading the Gaiters in scoring the final four years he was in Lennoxville. He was a three-time team MVP and two-time Bishop’s University Male Athlete of the Year.
After finishing at Bishop’s in 1982 he found his way to the Toronto Police Service as a uniformed officer starting in 1989. He worked his way through the ranks holding a number of positions. He is currently a Sergeant in the Toronto Police Crime Unit. In 2001 he received the Chief of Police Award for Excellence.
In 1994, Bennett created a basketball league for youth in the high profile disadvantaged communities within the city of Toronto. The program involved over 400 youth and in 2002 Bennett received the Queen’s Jubilee Medal from the Governor General of Canada for his initiative.
In 2003, Bennett was given the Black History Month award for exemplary service to the black community.
