Lionel ‘Butch’ Staples was an outstanding playmaking guard for the Gaiters basketball team. He held the school’s assist record for a number of years and captained the team in his senior year. In 1967 Butch was a key member of the CIAU Bronze Medal winning team. He was recognized as an OSLAA all-star for three consecutive years (1965-67). His skill and leadership earned him team Most Valuable Players honours in his senior year.

To add to his brilliant career as Bishop’s, Butch distinguished himself as a successful coach in a nine-year career with the McGill Redmen (1974-83), In 1977 Butch led the Redmen to the Quebec University Athletic Association championship and he was selected as the CIAU Coach of the Year for his endeavours.
